Alcoholics Anonymous as a Resource for Professionals

Helping Those Who May Be Struggling with Alcohol

If you work with people who may be affected by alcohol problems, Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) is available as a community resource.

Dallas Intergroup Association works with professionals throughout the Dallas area by providing information about A.A., helping connect individuals with local groups and service committees, and answering questions about how A.A. can support those seeking recovery.

We welcome communication from:

  • Healthcare professionals
  • Counselors and therapists
  • Social workers
  • Treatment professionals
  • Employee assistance programs (EAPs)
  • Educators and student support services
  • Clergy and faith communities
  • Corrections and justice professionals
  • Community organizations
  • Anyone who works with individuals who may benefit from A.A.

How A.A. Can Help

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength, and hope with one another to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for membership.

Dallas Intergroup provides:

Local Meeting Information

We help individuals find A.A. meetings in the Dallas area, including in-person, online, open, closed, and specialty meetings.

We can answer questions about:

  • How A.A. works
  • What happens at meetings
  • What someone can expect when attending their first meeting

Presentations and Community Outreach

Dallas Intergroup helps coordinate A.A. information presentations for organizations, schools, health fairs, community events, and professional groups. We want to help raise awareness in the community that there is a solution for the drinking problem, which free of charge, accessible, and effective.

In-House A.A. Meetings at Your Facility

If you would like to host an A.A. meeting at your facility or on your campus, Dallas Intergroup can connect you with an A.A. group near you which can facilitate a meeting at your location. A.A. meetings are run by A.A. members who have personal experience with recovery from their drinking problem, and who can explain what A.A. has to offer as a solution.

Referring Someone to A.A.

Many people find their way to A.A. through referrals from healthcare, legal, educational, and other professionals. A.A. does not discriminate based on how someone arrives — our focus is helping the person who wants help with their drinking.

A simple way to connect someone:

  1. Encourage them to contact A.A.
  2. Provide local meeting information
  3. Allow them to decide whether A.A. is right for them

You can also invite them to contact Dallas Intergroup directly for assistance finding a meeting.

What A.A. Does — and Does Not Do

A.A. Does:

✓ Provide a fellowship of people recovering from alcoholism
✓ Offer meetings where members share their experience with recovery
✓ Connect people with others who have experience staying sober
✓ Cooperate with professionals who share a common goal of helping people recover

A.A. Does Not:

✗ Provide medical, psychological, or professional treatment
✗ Diagnose alcoholism or make recommendations about treatment
✗ Provide detox, rehabilitation, housing, financial assistance, or social services
✗ Keep attendance records or case histories
✗ Endorse or affiliate with outside organizations

A.A. maintains a policy of cooperation, but not affiliation, with professional communities.
